Grid Telecom, a telecommunications subsidiary of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), is contributing to the enhancement of broadband connectivity in remote rural areas of Sarantaporo, Elassona, in Thessaly. This initiative leverages the company’s optical infrastructure in collaboration with the Sarantaporo.gr Non Profit Organization.

As part of its first sponsorship initiative, Grid Telecom is providing free capacity services to connect the Sarantaporo.gr Wireless Community Network with the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology Network (GRNET SA), one of the country’s largest public technology organizations.

By connecting the Sarantaporo.gr Wireless Community Network to the nearest Data Center where GRNET has a presence through Grid Telecom’s infrastructure, the quality and speed of telecommunications services in the area will be significantly improved. This development will reduce the digital divide and facilitate the implementation of innovative solutions.

Sarantaporo.gr Non Profit Organization is a citizen-led volunteer initiative and a partner of GRNET, dedicated to improving internet access in the broader Sarantaporo region for the benefit of residents, students, and visitors. Its efforts have been recognized globally by the European Commission, IEEE, and the Internet Society.

The Sarantaporo.gr Wireless Community Network is a proven and long-standing example of user-driven broadband development. It is designed to support operations such as community clinics for e-prescriptions, public facilities, and to enable internet connectivity for remote livestock farms and agricultural businesses. Additionally, it supports educational initiatives that enhance the digital skills of the local population.
